Arlington’s proximity to the Potomac River provides opportunity for sailing and river rides to view the monuments of Washington. The city has 36 miles of hike/bike trails and numerous small public parks. Ball fields, soccer fields basketball courts and fitness centers are located throughout the communities of Arlington. The city has a community garden program in which residents can apply for a garden plot in which to grow vegetables, fruits and flowers for a $40.fee.
Two nature centers, The Gulf Branch and Long Branch Nature Centers provide programs, naturalist led lectures and hikes, field studies and educational demonstrations about Virginias native flora and fauna. Several neighborhoods hold weekend farmer’s markets and various musical and cultural festivals take place around Arlington throughout the year.
