Introduction

Hills and Valleys

With all the excitement of the nation’s capital just across the river, Arlington, Virginia is an ideal place to visit, live and work. Named for the home of the Civil War general, Robert E. Lee, Arlington is a collection of “urban villages” that make up a largely residential suburb of Washington, DC. President George Washington selected the region to be home to the Federal Government and in 1801 an Act of Congress decreed Arlington (then Alexandria,) to provide the nearest city to support the nation’s capital.

The once mainly rural area began developing homes for the growing workforce of DC in the 1930’s.

Today, the city is a desirable place to live just a short ride on the capital’s well-designed metrorail train system from all the action of DC. The city has an active community with over fifty civic associations and many service and other commissions in place. Commercial enclaves scattered throughout the neighborhoods provide residents of Arlington with world class dining, shopping and cultural events. The area is dotted with multiple small recreational parks and the Potomac River provides opportunities for boat enthusiasts.
